How to Add Asana to Slack

Slack is a messaging app that helps businesses stay connected. You can integrate Asana with Slack to streamline collaboration and make discussions more actionable.

Asana can be linked to Slack channels, new tasks can be entered from in-workspace messages, and you can be notified of important updates without leaving Slack. Follow the steps below to learn how to add Asana to Slack.

First step: Add the Asana App to Slack

  1. Head over to the official Slack app directory and search for “Asana” in the search bar.
  2. Select Asana from the list of options available.

  3. Now click on the Add to Slack button. If the Asana app is already installed in your workspace, click on Open in Slack.

  4. In the next window, select Allow to connect Asana with Slack.

  5. Then, select Open Slack to go back to your Slack workspace.

Second step: Connect Your Account

  1. In Slack, click on More, located on the left panel.
  2. Select Apps from the context menu.

  3. Search for Asana and click on the Add button under it.

  4. In the next window, click Allow to grant Asana access to Slack. You’ll be prompted to sign in to your Asana account if you are not already logged in.
  5. Click Allow again.

  6. Then, click the Open Slack button to launch your Slack workspace.

Use Asana in Slack

Create Tasks

  1. Click on the plus icon next to the text bar.

  2. Look for Asana and select it.

  3. Select Create a task and enter your details.

  4. Alternatively, you can also hover over a message and click the three dots menu.
  5. Select Create a task from the menu and add the task details.

Update Your Notification Preferences

  1. In Slack, select More in the left panel.
  2. Select Apps from the context menu.

  3. Search for “Asana” and click on it.

  4. Now click on the plus icon next to the message field.

  5. Type /asana settings and click Send to message input.

  6. Send the message.
  7. Then, click Turn on under ‘Notifications about tasks’ to enable notifications.

  8. You can turn off notifications by selecting Turned on.

Manage Link Previews

When you share Asana links in Slack, previews will not be displayed by default. Below are the steps to enable them:

  1. Follow steps 1-6 under the ‘Update Your Notification Preferences’ heading above.
  2. Expand the dropdown menu under Display link previews and pick an option.

Change Your Default Domain

Your Asana account will be linked to a default domain where you can store tasks you create in Slack. You can change your default domain in Asana if you work with more than one organization and want to save tasks to another workspace. 

  1. Follow steps 1-6 under the ‘Update Your Notification Preferences’ heading above.
  2. Expand the dropdown menu under Change default domain and choose your preferred option.

Disconnect Your Account

  1. Follow steps 1-6 under the ‘Update Your Notification Preferences’ heading above.
  2. Click Deauthorize under ‘Deauthorize your Asana account’.
