How to Indent in Google Sheets

Indenting makes data easier to read and understand, thus improving productivity. Unlike Microsoft Excel, there is no native way to indent your data in Google Sheets. However, there is a workaround that allows you to quickly indent.

Follow the below steps to indent in Google Sheets cells:

  1. Select the cell or cells you want to indent.

    Select range
Select the range of cells to indent.
  2. From the Format menu, choose the Number option. Then, from the sub-menu, select Custom number format.

Click on the Custom number format option.
  3. In the ‘Custom number formats’ dialog box, enter a blank space for each desired indentation, followed by an @ symbol, then click Apply. In this example, I specify that I need an indent of 4 space characters through “ @” (ignoring the quotes).
