How to Make a Slack Channel Public

Slack workspace users can set up public channels on desktop or mobile apps. This article demonstrates how to create a public channel in Slack.

Things to keep in mind

  1. All workspace users can create a public channel by default. Contact your workspace owner or admin if you cannot create the channel.
  2. Users with the paid plan can invite people outside their organization.
  3. In Slack, each channel name should be different from one another.

Create a public Slack channel on the computer

  1. Go to Slack and open your workspace.

    Launch Slack workspace.
    Select the workspace you would like to use.

  2. To create a new channel, go to “Channels” and click on + channel. After that, click Create a channel.

  3. Enter the new channel’s name and attributes. To add people outside your organization to the channel, click on the box before “Share outside [your workspace.].” Finally, select Create.

  4. Slack gives you two options for adding members to the new public channel. You can add specific or all workspace users to the new channel. Learn more about adding members to a channel here. Finally, click on Add.

  1. Launch the Slack app.
  2. Below “Channels,” select +Add channel. From the pop-up, tap on Create Channel.

  3. Add the channel name and description. Don’t toggle the bar next to Make private since you are creating a public channel. To share the channels with people outside your organization, check the box next to Share this channel. After that, tap on Create.

  4. Select the members you want to add to the channel (you can check Add Everyone), then click Add.

  1. Open the Slack app.
  2. Click on + Add channel below “Channels.”

  3. Click on the plus icon (+) on the bottom right to create a new channel on the new page.
