How to Reboot an iPhone

Restarting your iOS device can fix many issues, such as freezing and lag. In this article, we will be going over the simple process of rebooting your iPhone.

Restart using side buttons

iPhone X, 11, 12, or 13

  1. Press and hold the side button on your iPhone and either of the volume buttons to bring up the power off slider.

  2. Drag the slider and give your iPhone around 30 seconds to turn it off completely. If your device freezes up at this stage, you can force restart it.
  3. Now, turn your device back on by pressing and holding the side button till the Apple logo appears on your screen. 

iPhone SE (2nd Generation), 8, 7 or 6

  1. Press the side button on the right side of your iPhone till the power off slider appears.
  2. Drag the power slider and wait for 30 seconds till your device switches off.

  3. Restart your iPhone by pressing and holding the side button till the Apple logo shows up.  

iPhone SE (1st Generation) 5, or Earlier Models

  1. Press and hold the power button on top of your iPhone until the power slider appears.

  2. Drag the slider and wait for 30 seconds till your device switches off completely. 
  3. Turn your iPhone back on by pressing and holding the top button till the Apple logo appears on your screen.

What to Do If My iPhone Won’t Turn on or is Frozen

If your iPhone’s screen gets stuck on an app and won’t respond to touch inputs anymore, you can troubleshoot it by following these steps:

  1. Press the volume up button and quickly release it.

  2. Do the same with the volume down button
  3. Long press the side button till the Apple logo appears on your screen. 

If your iPhone still isn’t turning on, try charging it for at least an hour before attempting this process again. If you still have no luck, contact Apple Support

iPhone 7 or 7 Plus

Press and hold the side button and volume down button simultaneously till the Apple logo shows up.

iPhone 6s or earlier models

Press and hold the Home button and side button until you see the Apple logo on your screen. 

What to do if your iPhone gets stuck during startup

If your iPhone gets stuck during startup and all you see is a blue or red screen, try using these steps:

  1. Plug your iPhone into a computer. If you’re using a PC for this step, open iTunes. If you’re on macOS, open Finder.
  2. Select your iPhone on your computer.
  3. Now, follow the “Phone Frozen” troubleshoot method mentioned above.
  4. If you keep holding the buttons, you will be taken to the iPhone recovery mode screen.

  5. You will get a pop-up on your computer screen. Choose the option that says Update.

  6. Pressing Update will prompt your computer to download the software update for your iPhone. If the recovery process takes more than 15 minutes, your phone will automatically exit the recovery phone. Repeat steps 2-4 to initiate the troubleshoot again.
