If you work on a Slack team, you might be interested in sending GIFs in the group chat. GIFs are perfect for adding a little spice to a boring text conversation. This article will show the different ways to send GIFs in Slack.

How to send GIFs in Slack without adding add-ons

You can share GIFs by extracting them from the GIFs websites and sharing them on Slack, then send them as a link or upload the GIF in Slack. The process is the same for web, computer, and mobile Slack versions.

How to Send GIF as a link in Slack

  1. Select a GIF from an online GIF search engine of your choice. In this case, we’re using GIPHY.

  2. Click on Share and select the Copy GIF link.

  3. In your workspace, pick the channel or team member to whom you want to send the GIF.
  4. Paste the link in the messaging section, then click on the paper plane icon to send.

How to upload GIFs in Slack

  1. Select a GIF from an online GIF search engine. Next, right-click on the GIF and click Save image as…, then save the image on your computer. Note: If you already have the GIF on your device, you can skip this.

  2. In your workspace, pick the channel or team member to whom you want to send the GIF.
  3. Select the + icon in the messaging section and select Upload from your computer.

How to Send GIFs in Slack using GIPHY

To save yourself time, you can add the GIPHY app to Slack. Once you add it, all workspace members can use it to send GIFs.

Note: You can only add GIPHY on Slack’s desktop or browser version. However, after integration, you can also use GIPHY to send GIFs on the mobile app. 

How to add GIPHY to the Slack workspace

  1. Go to Slack, and launch your workspace by clicking on Launch Slack.

  2. Click on the drop-down icon next to your workspace name.
  3. Go to Settings & administration and select Manage apps to add a new app.

  4. Type “Giphy” in the search bar and click on the app.

  5. Click Add to Slack in the new window.

  6. On the next page, click Add Giphy Intergration.

  7. Customize the integration settings, then click Save Intergration.

How to Send GIFs using GIPHY

Slack allows you to send GIFs using this slash command

/giphy
    1. Select the channel or team member you want to send the GIF to.
    2. Type the slash command followed by a phrase in the messaging section:
      /giphy <insert caption>

      For instance,

      /giphy its monday

    3. Giphy will display a random GIF in the conversation section. Click Shuffle, and Giphy will show you another GIF. If you like the GIF, click Send.
