How to Underline in Google Sheets

When you want to emphasize a word or phrase, you can underline it. In Google Sheets, you can underline all text in a cell or range of cells or only specific terms.

Option #1: Underline all the text in a cell range

  1. Select the cell or a range of cells you want to highlight.

    Select Cells
    Select cell or cell ranges.

  2. From the Format menu, hover over the Text option. From the sub-menu, choose Underline. Alternatively, press Ctrl + U (for Windows users) or Cmd + U (for macOS users).

    Select Underline
    Click on Format > Text > Underline.

  3. You’ll notice the selected cells are underlined.

    Entire Text Underlined
    All text in the cell range is underlined.

Option #2: Underline only specific terms

  1. Double-click on the cell to enter edit mode.

    Double-click on the cell.

  2. Use your mouse to select or highlight the text you want to underline.

    Select Specific Text
    Highlight the text to underline.

  3. From the Format menu, hover over the Text option. From the sub-menu, choose Underline. Alternatively, press Ctrl + U (for Windows users) or Cmd + U (for macOS users).
    Select Underline
    Click on Format > Text > Underline.

    The selected words are underlined.

    Specific Text Underlined
    Highlighted text is underlined.
